Confessions of a Blog Newbie

mabel strickland circa 1935

This is a huge belated thank you to any and all people involved in getting my blog post about DVDs on the Freshly Pressed page. I also apologize for being such a total newbie that it took me a while to figure out what happened. Not exactly sure of how this actually came about, but even if it was pure luck I’m going to roll with it and be happy.

I decided to start blogging in on December 21, 2010, a little more than a month ago. Wrote the first post and hit the publish button on December 23, 2010, 2 days later. Chose WordPress because I liked the selection of layouts and the blog that I have been following for years uses it. Stumptuous.com, a great sight for real women to get into weight training.

The next few days I fiddled around with the widgets and  a created an ‘about me’ page.  I just wanted to write. Had a blizzard of jumbled thoughts and ideas bouncing around the brain pan and had a desperate need to get them out. There are a gazillion Blogs floating around. Many them populated by actual human beings.  Talented and creative, these bloggers have varied and fascinating things to say. Faced with all this, I was convinced that it would be a good long time for anyone to discover my little blog, off in the weeds.

From everything I’ve read about blogging, one can safely cruise along in relative anonymity for years.  The usual advice is to “hone your skill, develop your craft.” I certainly have a lot of honing and developing to do. My desire is to write short stories, novellas, maybe even a book or two.

On the morning of January 20th I fired up my laptop and sat down with a cup of coffee to surf around a bit. Checked my post, DVD Hoarders Anonymous, to proof read it for the 87th time. There were comments, lots of them, and more coming.  I called a friend in a panic, babbling about spam and getting hacked, and other hysterical theories. She told me to calm down and consider that someone may have actually read the post and commented on it. That sent me into an even worse panic and I started hyperventilating and sat on the floor.

A few of the comments said “congratulations for getting Freshly Pressed.”  I thought it was sarcasm. And then thought, UH OH, what I have done? Am in trouble? Did I not credit a picture or reference correctly? Is someone going to show up at my door and hand me a warrant. So I Googled it, my solution to almost any problem. The first link led back to the WordPress, you guessed it, Freshly Pressed. What a find. All kinds of cool blogs. Easily distracted I visited them one after the other.

A few pages back I recognized the picture that I used for my post. Ah, that explains it. My little post was mistaken for this featured post. Starting reading it and realized “hey, this is not like my post this is my post.” How did it get here? Only then did it hit me. Someone had indeed read the post and thought that maybe I had something to say. What a shocking revelation.

Things have settled down since then. I keep plugging away trying post every day. I am deeply grateful to all the people who dropped by and took a few minutes to comment. A few have even stuck around to comment here and there.  A great encouragement to keep going. I know I have a LOT to learn, but that’s the joy of it all.

  1. You’re not the first to see all the comments and think spam. Happen recently to a political blogger I read. She really panicked.

    Have fun.

  2. girl, you have this ability for formulate a sensible perspective on all the chaos and insanity going on around us these days….wonder where the road will lead us. it’s nice to have some kindred spirits out there that truly believe in “live and let live” and “if how i choose to live my life is not affecting you, then leave me alone”… sounds kinda maxine-ish…ooops.. peace zig

    1. Why thank you 🙂 You have summed up my philosophy better than I ever have 🙂

  3. Great post, and once again congrats to you for the recognizition of a job well done. I am also a newbie, but just don’t have the noteriety yet. I am aspiring to get to your level one day 🙂 I think as newbie’s it is nice when one of us get’s noticed.

  4. Congratulations! That’s great! I always love your funny earthy blogs even if I don’t always comment. I’m still learning the ropes and a few times have wandered over here by a wrong route and couldn’t comment. Not sure how that works. I’ll learn though!

  5. I’m still a “newbie” too (been blogging since Sept 1010) and I thought no-one would even bother to take a look at my random ramblings. I still remember how stunned I was when I saw someone had actually a) found me and b) stayed around to read what I was writing! I was even more stunned when I started to have subscribers…. not only were people reading the first time, but they actually wanted to CONTINUE to read stuff I wrote!!! I’m STILL grinning lol.

I absolutely LOVE your blog, you have a wonderful way with words and I look forward to reading more of your stuff. 🙂

  6. Keep plugging away! Love your blog and look forward to your posts.

    1. Aww. Thank you so much 🙂
