“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. …”
– Roy Batty, in the movie Blade Runner
In preparation for sending my job South of the Border, I’ve been busy at work. Purging files, handing over ownership, transfer of knowledge and all the other buzzwords. It got me thinking about this quote today. As I look back over the mere 5 years I’ve worked at this place, there are so many things that I learned that are stored only in my brain. Not all knowledge can be categorized, standardized, transferized or monetized. Memories, abstract lessons, navigating through people who have lost track of life outside the corporate box.
My boss wants me to “hand over my knowledge” to him before I leave. I’m an executive assistant, it might be possible to transfer some to another assistant. Not to a manager who can’t attach a file to an email. And why should he have to? His time is better spent doing manager stuff. Just the tasks that I have committed to paper fill 3 type written, 2 column pages.
This list is only the tangible things. That’s not networking or who is the cute guy in IT to call when everyone else fails. Or the crabby old battle-axe that works in the other building who knows everything about everything. You just have stroke her feathers for 30 minutes to get the info out of her. There is no way I can teach him all the things that I do in the background for him in a couple of weeks. It’s almost insulting to imply that I can, or that anyone can for that matter. I get this mental image of him on the high seas in a washtub with no paddle, only a few pages of instructions and web links.
The trend now is self-service, everyone does everything for themselves. No specialists and no assistance. What is happening is we are ending up with corporations full of Jack of All Trades – Master of none.
Oh well, that’s how it goes. Corporations don’t exactly move at the speed of light. Soon it won’t be my problem.
