I’m Going Christmas Shopping

Santa, Slip a Sable Under the Tree

Fasten your seatbelts and gird your loins, I’m Christmas shopping for real today. Or maybe at the very latest tomorrow. Going to a mall. Yee Gods, a scary thought. But with me going to the mall is like trying to get a kid in a bathtub. They kick and scream until they get there. Then they have a blast and don’t want to come out. Being as this Christmas week I’m going to actually spend some money instead of just looking.

The only person on my list that I don’t really want to shop for is the sister-in-law from hell. I tried to like her. I really did, but it’s just not possible. She’s one of those people who, if she lived in medieval times, would be jockeying to have me beheaded. Just for being me. She married what she thinks is the heir to the throne and views me as a potential usurper. Big effin deal, so I married her husband’s baby brother. Get over it. She did the hard work and birthed the grandchildren. I have no intention of birthing no babies. Been there done that. And I don’t want her damned husband, thank you very much! He’s even more conservative than my husband. And that’s difficult to achieve, let me tell you. I don’t think there a conservo-meter that measures that far to the right.

So anyway, I’ll pull myself back from this hissy fit and get back to shopping. The thing I love most about going to the mall at Christmas time is the people watching. Hoo Lordy. Some people charge around like enraged rhinoceroses, knocking you out-of-the-way to get at the huge pile of gifty things on sale. Yea, like they don’t have 50 million more in the stockroom. Give me a break.

Others wander around with their eyes glazed over. Husbands holding pocket books. Kids whining because what they really want to do is rip everything up or take a nap. I can understand that feeling. I like to stare at people and imagine what their story is. Maybe I could wear a flack jacket with the word writer on it and run around trying to interview people. Would mall security throw me out? Hmmm, I know. I’ll hire some college kid to follow me around with a video camera and pretend I’m interviewing for a mythical channel called KWAK. Now we’re talking. Oh the fun I could have. Maybe I’ll throw caution to the winds and have my picture taken sitting on Santa’s lap.

Fall Finally Fell

The tree in our backyard is a fruitless mulberry. Never even heard of that until I moved into Mr. Husband’s abode. I like this tree a lot. It’s huge and does thing its own way. Maybe I was a tree in an alternate life. Around town the leaves are starting to change color. The foggy misty weather makes it look like fall here finally.

But, back to this tree. While all the other trees in town gradually changed colors and gently shed leaves this tree stayed the course remaining green and cheerful. The all of a sudden it took a big tree breath, shook its petticoat and blew out, patooey. All the leaves went at once. It was amazing. The grass in the back yard was showing in the 30 minutes later…knee deep in leaves. We could hear the leaves falling from inside the house. I’ve never seen anything like it. I wanted to applaud. Now the tree is in stately winter glory with spooky naked limbs and ivy climbing up its trunk.

Maybe I’ll use this leaf event as my trigger that the season is here in years to come. I ventured out to a mall yesterday and Santa is everywhere. The management must have taken a hint from people running around screaming with their hands over their ears in previous seasons. The music was understated and low in volume. It wasn’t as horrifying as I thought it was going to be by a long shot. I enjoyed myself. Didn’t buy anything, but didn’t feel the pressure either. It was a quick trip for lunch with a girlfriend who still works where I used to do my 9 to 5 thing. So I’m inspired now. I’m going to venture out shopping, come what may.

Are You In the Mood?

Over dinner the other night a friend asked “are you in the mood yet?” Uh, excuse me? “You know, the Christmas mood.” OOOooo. I thought about for a minute and it hit me. No I’m not…yet. Then I felt a pang of guilt. Uh oh, I shoulded on myself again. I should be in the Christmas mood. I’m in a fine mood just not that particular mood. As I’ve said in a previous musing. I think should is a four letter word.

I’m going to examine this more closely, by cracky. Being of a Catholic bent in religious leanings, I’m in an Advent kinda mood. Introspective and examining my good will towards men or the occasional lack there of. A period of peaceful winter darkness and waiting for the wonderful to occur. Christmas always started for me at the midnight mass on Christmas eve. I never liked the day after Thanksgiving rush of the lemmings to the local mall or bargain warehouse.

I think the media about the “state of the economy” and the advertizing industry have backed themselves into a pickle this year. Do you feel torn between 2 opposing minds sets? I sure do. On the one hand there is the “we’re all broke and it’s only gonna get worse” camp. On the other there is the “Spend, spend, spend till it hurts” camp. Is there a middle ground? I hope so. I waited too late to make everyone a scarf, maybe I’ll make fudge for everyone, or Bourbon balls. Yeah, that sounds like fun. I can cook and get tipsy at the same time. Yeah buddy, now we’re talking.

And of course every year, there are the people who keep score. You got me this last year so I’m obligated to give you that this year. You didn’t get me anything last year so I’m gonna be pissed off all year and not give you anything this year and tell you, in front of everyone, why I’m not. Bah humbug. Where is the Christmas spirit in that?

This Christmas and every Christmas, I still love Mr. Husband to death. However, every year I go though canniptions trying to figure out what to get him for Christmas. He truly is the man who has everything. If he wants something he gets it. End of story. If he doesn’t have it it’s because he doesn’t want it. Not to worry I’ll figure something out. But I hope he knows that for me, he is my best present for any occasion. I enjoy our time together more than any thing that comes in or out of a box.

Advent Prayer of the Day:

Let me raise my voice

With new courage and deep joy

to give you praise with my life.
