News Flash -Texas Declares Independence From Mexico

The Alamo

On this day, March 02,  in 1836, Texas became a republic. On March 1 delegates from the seventeen Mexican municipalities of Texas and the settlement of Pecan Point met at Washington-on-the-Brazos to consider independence from Mexico. George C. Childress presented a resolution calling for independence, and the chairman of the convention appointed Childress to head a committee of five to draft a declaration of independence. In the early morning hours of March 2, the convention voted unanimously to accept the resolution. After fifty-eight members signed the document, Texas became the Republic of Texas. The change remained to be demonstrated to Mexico.

Now we’re giving Texas back, one job at a time. Almost every day I hear about the immigration “problem” on the news. I think it is more of an immigration “consequence.” People want to come here because it is the land of the free, equal opportunity, anyone willing to work hard can have the “American Dream.” We are inadvertently solving this problem/consequence gradually by sending, or allowing multinational corporations to send, our jobs and that income to other countries. If all the job opportunities are now in Asia or Mexico why would anyone want to come here? Was that the plan all along? Just throwing that out there for conspiracy theorists.

Lady Liberty

The founding fathers were willing to fight and die for “certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” We are sitting here all comfy and secure that this is still the way it is. Meanwhile, back in reality, we are chipping away at our inalienable rights and pursuit of happiness everyday. Passing laws, proposals, spewing moral outrage (interesting oxymoron when used to judge oneself superior to another). Lectures about what is or is not good for us. We have let other people decide what is good for us for so long that it has become the norm. Have we in the U.S.A. collectively forgotten that people declaring themselves superior intellectually and morally to us is the reason we said “stick it up your wazoo!” and got on the boat?

My grandmother was full of clichés. One her favorites was “empty barrels make the most noise.” I love it. Them that are minding their own business and trying to live their own lives are finding it more difficult to do so. There are way too many people with enough time on their hands to start running our lives for us at an ever increasing level of invasion of our privacy, bodies and thoughts. “You better do what we say,” regardless of how uniformed they may be, or how much it benefits them at our expense. “If you don’t, you will be ostracized, declared mentally incompetent, thrown in jail, or taxed into oblivion.”

Heard on the news recently that there is a proposed bill in the works that would allow hospital emergency rooms to deny life saving medical treatment to a woman if that might endanger her fetus. This concept is more than frightening. Will it delay all emergency treatment of women of child bearing age to determine whether of not she might be pregnant. If so, I’m sure glad I stopped coloring my hair! All the more reason for a 12 year old doctor in the E.R. to assume I am a post menopausal crone. Related Articles
